SecretShot lets you screenshot snaps in Snapchat without alerting the other person

If you’re a Snapchat user, then you’re likely very familiar with the notification that gets sent out to the other party when you take screenshots or record your display when viewing the other person’s snap.

SecretShot for Snapchat.

For years, jailbreakers have used jailbreak tweaks to evade this kind of detection so that they wouldn’t notify the other party, but following the proliferation of rootless jailbreaks, there have been countless requests for a modern tweak to come about. Fortunately, iOS developer ichitaso has re-written Eamon Tracey’s popular SecretShot jailbreak tweak with compatibility.

SecretShot, just as the name implies, keeps it a secret from the other person you’re using Snapchat with when you take a screenshot of or record your display while viewing their Snap. According to ichitaso, the rewrite was a direct response to a request posted on /r/jailbreak earlier in the week.

As you can tell from the screenshot examples, SecretShot does add a preference pane to the Settings app where you can simply toggle SecretShot on or off on demand. The preference pane also includes a convenient button to forcefully close the Snapchat app so that any changes you make can be applied without incident.

As a part of being totally re-written, develop ichitaso says that the preference pane has been re-written from Swift to Objective-C.

Are there other options besides SecretShot to get the job done? Absolutely. We won’t try to tell you there aren’t. In fact, even commenters in the aforementioned /r/jailbreak post say that the Snapper jailbreak tweak captures screenshots without triggering Snapchat’s screenshot detection, and that a paid jailbreak tweak like Wicked achieves non-detection as well.

Still, there’s a lot of appeal to a free jailbreak tweak like SecretShot because it doesn’t cost the end user any money to use, so it’s probably a good thing that this can to fruition.

If you’re interested in giving the SecretShot jailbreak tweak a try, then you can download it for free from ichitaso’s personal repository via your favorite package manager app. The tweak supports jailbroken iOS & iPadOS 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 devices, including rootful and rootless jailbreaks. You can even use this with RootHide if you wanted to.

Anyone who isn’t using ichitaso’s personal repository yet can add it to their package manager app by using the URL provided below:

SecretShot is fully open source on ichitaso’s GitHub page for anyone who might be interested in learning more about what makes it tick.
